JEFF ALESSANDRELLI

I’M NOT A VIRGIN BUT I PLAY ONE ON TV

That the river was wet
appalled us.

That none of us knew how to swim
somehow made it even worse.

So the land became a celibacy against the water,
feverishly pacing the riverbank
a kind of foreplay.

Fleshly we insert
ourselves into the rushing,
fleshly we sink.

Land is not liquid’s opposite.
Movement
                          is.
Then impossible

to change the channel,
impossible not to want

to watch.
